Safer Guidelines for Malawi

Safe Design Draft

In December 2009 a series of earthquake caused substantial damage to buildings in northern Malawi.

  • In partnership with government and other agencies a Guideline for Safer House Construction was quickly produced to assist communities to rebuild.  During the production of this document and supporting materials, it was realised that this initiative could be developed as a tool to be used nationally and be imbedded in policy and skill training.
  • Disaster Risk Reduction, as a component of increased resilience, was the foundation of the initial recovery programme and informed the design and methods of construction and repairs. This initiative has raised awareness and has been adopted by government and other organisations.  There is now a planned review to refine and develop the Guidelines.
